Production and Interchange
 
  In 2004 the metalworking industry generated a turnover of approximatively 400 bn euro, creating wealth (Added Value) in the order of 98 bn euro (78% of which was used for wages and salaries).    
       
  The industry contributed 8% of the Gross Domestic Product and over 40% of the Added Value produced by the manufacturing industry as a whole.

Companies in the metalworking industry
export goods with a value nearly of 140 bn euro, representing 50% of exports of the Italian industry as a whole. 58% of exports are to the European Union, 42% to other countries.
 
     
       
  Products in the metalworking industry make a large contribution to the near parity of Italy’s balance of payments, structurally in deficit due to energy and food imports, adding about 14 bn euro to the credit side of 2004.
